Wall Street estimates that Netflix’s revenue will come in at a little over $8.75 billion for the quarter, showing a year-over-year growth of roughly 11%. Additionally, the estimate for earnings will stand at $2.22 per share. The Zacks consensus estimate for earnings is currently pegged at $2.20 per share, up 0.9% over the past 30 days. The figure indicates an increase of 1,733.3% from the same quarter last year. The consensus estimate for fourth-quarter revenues is about $8.72 billion, suggesting 11.01% growth from Q4-2022.

The company’s earnings have beaten the consensus estimates in three of the trailing four quarters. With the entertainment landscape continually evolving and consumer preferences shifting, analysts and investors are eager to dissect the financial performance of this industry leader. Let's delve into what to expect and some key factors that may influence Netflix's Q4-2023 earnings.

Subscription Growth and Retention

One of the most closely watched metrics for Netflix is its subscriber growth. The streaming service has experienced robust growth over the years, but the competition in the streaming space has intensified. As new players enter the market, the ability of Netflix to attract and retain subscribers becomes increasingly critical.

At the end of the last quarter, Netflix had a total of 247.15 million paid subscribers globally, up 10.8% year over year. One of the most used features of Netflix among friends was its password-sharing ability. Sometimes, friends or families used to have one subscription and share the password to use and pay together. However, since May 2023, Netflix has begun rolling out restrictions on password sharing in the U.S. and over 100 other countries. Still, you can share the password in some countries, but it comes with an $8 payment. That policy has, so far, received positive feedback, resulting in an increase of 5.9 million subscribers in Q2 and 8.76 million subscribers in Q3. However, for Q4, it may not have such a significant effect. After these changes, Netflix has grown more confident about its value proposition, hiking prices for its basic and premium plans since October. Now, we have to wait and see the real feedback.

On top of that, since November 1, Netflix has discontinued its free mobile plan in Kenya, where users were able to access 25% of its content without a subscription for two years. This strategic decision is also expected to increase paid subscriber numbers.

Content Strategy and Original Productions

Netflix's success has been largely driven by its original content strategy. With a massive library of original shows, movies, and documentaries, the platform has become synonymous with binge-worthy content. In Q4-2023, attention will be on the performance of key releases and the overall reception of new productions, such as a Pokémon Concierge in collaboration with The Pokémon Company, the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho featuring Takumi Kitamura, and the sci-fi film Rebel Moon—Part 1: A Child of Fire, directed, written, and produced by Zack Snyder. In addition, they have another powerful option: the game! This option can increase both subscribers and revenue.

Global Market Dynamics

Netflix is a global player, and its performance is influenced by factors beyond its control, such as economic conditions and regulatory changes in different regions. Investors will be keen to understand how the company is navigating challenges and capitalizing on opportunities in various markets.

Additionally, any updates on Netflix's plans for further international expansion or adaptations to regional preferences could impact investor sentiment. However, we should not forget about the competitive streaming services such as Disney’s Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and Amazon. Social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are also attempting to secure their share with their latest updates.

Market Sentiment and Future Outlook

Netflix's Q4-2023 earnings report is eagerly anticipated, as it will offer a comprehensive view of the company's performance in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape. From subscriber numbers and content strategy to global market dynamics and technological innovations, the report will provide valuable insights into Netflix's position in the highly competitive streaming industry.

However, the financial markets are not only interested in past performance but also in the company's outlook for the future. Analysts and investors will be looking for guidance on Netflix's expectations for the upcoming quarters, including any shifts in strategy, anticipated challenges, or opportunities on the horizon, especially in the current situation where they are very worried about the state of the economy in the coming year.

Investors, analysts, and consumers alike will be keenly watching as Netflix unveils its financial results, looking for cues on the company's ability to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing landscape.

Stock Price Outlook and Technical Analysis

The NFLX stock price increased by about 25% in the third quarter, and the target for the first quarter of 2024 is $508, representing about a 10% gain for this quarter and a 4% increase from the current price. From a technical standpoint, in the daily chart, while the price is making new highs, the on-balance volume (OBV) prints lower highs, indicating that, technically, bulls are losing their steam. The first support sits at $445, and then the 200-DMA is at $416. With strong support seen at this level, it is unlikely to fall below that, but breaking through could send the price towards $370, which is highly improbable.
