Producer Inflation

Canada's producer inflation report for October 2024 shows mixed trends, with notable improvements in some areas. The Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI) rose by 1.1% year-over-year, rebounding from a previous decline of -1.0%, signaling higher prices for finished goods. On a monthly basis, the IPPI increased by 1.2%, surpassing both the prior month's 0.3% and the forecasted -0.8%, reflecting a robust uptick in producer prices.

In contrast, the Raw Materials Price Index (RMPI) continued to show deflationary pressures on a yearly basis, with a decline of -2.8%, though this was a significant improvement from September's steep drop of -8.8%. However, on a monthly basis, the RMPI surged by 3.8%, recovering sharply from previous declines of -1.5% and -3.2%.

Consumer Inflation

Earlier this week we had the consumer inflation report as well. Canada's inflation data for October shows some uptick.

Canada's inflation data for October 2024 shows some uptick, with both the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Core CPI reflecting moderate inflationary pressures. The Core CPI rose by 0.4% on a monthly basis, significantly higher than the 0.0% change recorded in September. Year-over-year, Core CPI increased by 1.7%, slightly up from the previous month's 1.6%. Meanwhile, the overall CPI rose by 2.0% annually, exceeding expectations of 1.9% and up from 1.6% in September. On a monthly basis, CPI rose by 0.4%, a rebound from the previous month's -0.4% decline and a slight increase from 0.3% in September.

The data indicates that inflationary pressures are showing signs of moderating but remain present, particularly in consumer prices. With the Core CPI rising more than expected and the overall CPI showing a slight increase, the Bank of Canada is likely to continue assessing these inflation trends when making future monetary policy decisions. The persistent inflationary pressures could influence the central bank's stance on interest rates moving forward.

On the production side, the recovery in producer price levels, particularly in raw materials, signals improving cost dynamics within Canada’s production sector. This uptick could reflect stabilizing global commodity prices and a rebound in demand, suggesting that the Canadian economy may be experiencing a recovery in its supply chain and production activities.

The next BoC meeting will be held on December 11, where we expect to see the Bank of Canada to hold the current 3.75% interest rate to have the wait-and-see policy.
