How Netanyahu and Trump Orchestrated a Grand Deception on Iran

Renowned Israeli journalist Amit Segal—cited in Bild—reports that Israel secured the element of surprise by orchestrating an elaborate disinformation campaign involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Prior to the strike on Iran, a deception operation was executed across media and diplomatic channels, both domestically and internationally,” Segal explains.

According to Axios, Trump’s public cautions about a potential Israeli attack were themselves part of the ruse:

“Trump and his advisers feigned opposition to the strike—when in fact, they had no objections.”

Israel deliberately leaked rumors suggesting that Trump aimed to block the attack. Trump even stated that Israel might strike eventually, but not imminently, and emphasized the U.S. pursuit of a diplomatic solution.

Segal says that, unable to conceal preparations on such a large scale, Israeli planners adopted a “hide in plain sight” strategy. By openly discussing the attack, they counted on Tehran dismissing the threat—“a loudly barking dog doesn’t bite.” This convinced Iran’s leadership that no action was imminent.

Another element of the deception was a publicized June 15 meeting between U.S. envoy Steven Whitkoff and Iranian diplomats. Leaked information also claimed Netanyahu would delay any action until after his son Avner’s June 16 wedding. According to Segal, these leaks were all deliberate.

After Operation “Rising Lion” commenced, the U.S. stated that Israel had acted independently—yet Israeli sources insist there was full coordination. An Israeli government representative declared,

“We provided the American administration with evidence that Iran was on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon. There was comprehensive coordination with the Americans.”

Subsequently, Trump conceded that he had been aware of the operation in advance.
